Safety & installation

A clear, honest, practical safety guide.

Installed correctly and checked regularly, climbing sets give years of fun. Here are the basics for home and backyard.

The use zone around the set

Every set needs clear space around it, so a child who falls or jumps doesn’t hit anything else. Furniture, wall corners, radiators, planters and other toys don’t belong there. We show this zone on every product page and in the planner. Outdoors, CPSC guidance recommends a use zone of at least 6 feet in all directions around stationary equipment, and more in front of and behind swings. Our values are still to be verified (TODO).

Surfacing

Outdoors, the set must stand on impact-absorbing surfacing such as wood chips, engineered wood fiber, sand, pea gravel or rubber, at a depth suited to the fall height (see ASTM F1292 and CPSC guidance). Concrete, asphalt, packed dirt and grass are not suitable. Indoors we recommend a thick play mat under and in front of the set.

Mounting to walls, ceilings and ground

Ladder walls and ceiling sets must be fixed into studs or joists with hardware suited to the product — never into drywall alone. If in doubt, ask a licensed contractor. Backyard sets must be anchored to the ground. Hardware details: TODO.

Regular inspection

Check ropes for wear or fraying, knots for loosening, bolts for play and wood for cracks or splinters. If you find a problem, stop using the set until the part is replaced. Recommended inspection schedule and spare-parts list: TODO.

Adult supervision

Climbing sets should always be used with adult supervision. Bike helmets, drawstrings, scarves, necklaces and anything worn around the neck should come off before play — they can catch and cause strangulation.

Standards

Reference documents include ASTM F1148 (home playground equipment), ASTM F1487 (public playground equipment), ASTM F1292 (impact attenuation of surfacing), ASTM F1951 (accessible surfacing), and the CPSC Outdoor Home and Public Playground Safety Handbooks. Children’s products sold in the US are also subject to CPSIA requirements. Our testing and certification status: TODO. We make no compliance claims until testing is complete.

Installation: general steps

Each product’s own guide always comes first. These steps are a general outline.

  1. 1 Pick the spotMeasure with the planner; check the use zone and ceiling height.
  2. 2 Check the structureLocate studs or joists, or check that the ground is level and firm.
  3. 3 Sort the partsCheck every part and piece of hardware against the packing list.
  4. 4 Assemble the frameFollow the guide in order; tighten all joints.
  5. 5 Mount or anchor itFix to the wall, ceiling or ground with the right hardware.
  6. 6 Add the modulesAttach nets, ropes, rings and other modules; check every lock and carabiner.
  7. 7 Prepare the surfaceImpact-absorbing surfacing outdoors, a play mat indoors.
  8. 8 First checkCheck every connection once more before kids climb.

Total time depends on the product (TODO).

Quick checklist

  • Is all hardware tight?
  • Any wear on ropes?
  • Any splinters in the wood?
  • Is the use zone clear?
  • Is the surfacing in place and deep enough?
